As technology gets ever more impressive in cars, we now have something that still seems a little futuristic: hands-free driving. If you want to drive hands-free, you need Cadillac Super Cruise, and there are a few things you should know about it beforehand.

What Does Cadillac Super Cruise Do?

It Steers for You

Super Cruise is hands-free technology, so you can take your hands off the wheel and let the car do the steering. You can’t get your hands busy and engage in a hobby or something else entertaining while behind the wheel; you may need to take over steering at any point. It safely gets you around curves, so you won’t need to take over every time there’s a bend in the road.

It Changes Lanes

Your vehicle can change lanes by itself while you’re using Super Cruise. It will typically initiate this if your current lane is about to end. It can also overtake vehicles by changing lanes and then returning to your previous lane after you’ve passed the slower car. Not all vehicles with Super Cruise can do this. You can turn lane changing on and off.

Vehicles also allow you to tell Super Cruise that you’d like to change lanes. You do this by using your turn signal, and that lets your car know that you’d like to change lanes. The vehicle, if it has the lane-changing ability, will then change lanes if it’s possible and safe to do so.

It Keeps You Safe

Super Cruise always keeps your car centered in the lane, and it maintains a safe gap between you and the car in front of you. You can set the size of this gap yourself, like you would with regular cruise control. It also maintains a safe speed.

Where Can You Use Super Cruise?

You can use Super Cruise on over 750,000 miles of roads across North America and Canada. This number is growing all the time. You can only use Super Cruise on these compatible roads, which are mostly limited-access highways.

Where Can’t You Use Super Cruise?

You can never use Super Cruise on a suburban street, during difficult driving circumstances, in low visibility conditions, or when the roads are slippery or worked. You can’t use it in exit lanes, construction zones, or tunnels, either. It also should never be used while you’re towing unless you specifically have a vehicle that has Super Cruise with trailering abilities.

Does Super Cruise Make Your Car Fully Self-Driving?

Super Cruise doesn’t make your vehicle into a fully self-driving one. It still needs you to be paying attention to the road, and it monitors you to make sure you are. You need to be ready to take over driving at any moment.
