The city of Temecula, CA is located roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, in the southwestern corner of California. Surrounded by national forests and state parks, it is an excellent spot to set up base and go on exciting biking trips around the area. 1. San Luis Rey River Trail

Running for a little under 10 miles along the banks of the San Luis Rey River, the San Luis Rey River Trail is an excellent spot for bikers looking for a mixed urban and rural path. From downtown Temecula, the easternmost trailhead is located a little under 22 miles south, making it possible to reach it in less than half an hour by car or two hours by bike, following Old Highway 395 and route CA-76 W.

The best way to check out the San Luis Rey River Trail is from east to west , starting close to the Guajome Regional Park and finishing in the city of Oceanside, right by the beach. This trail is excellent for all skill levels and is open not only for bikers but also for hikers and even dog walkers. As it is separated from motorized traffic, it is a safe option for groups of friends or families.

2. Coastal Rail Trail

Located less than 45 miles away from downtown Temecula, the Coastal Rail Trail is another excellent option for bikers wanting to explore the California seaside. This trail runs between the city of Oceanside and the Santa Fe Depot, passing through some of the most scenic ocean vistas, with most of its sections separated from motor traffic except in sections where it is deemed safe to share the road with cars.

Although the Coastal Rail Trail currently has a total length of about 44 miles, there are plans to expand it further south. The route goes through grassy areas that are perfect for picnicking, a busy Oceanside downtown area full of restaurants and cafés, as well as the Solana Beach Transit Center and the towns of Encinitas and Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Getting here from downtown Temecula takes about an hour by car, driving along route I-15 S.

3. Mission Bay Biking Trail

With a total length of 12 miles, the Mission Bay Trail welcomes bikers and hikers with a flat terrain passing through some beautiful views of Mission Beach and the nearby bay. Apart from a few sections, the path is entirely separated from motor traffic, and there are several spots along the route and in the trailheads where you can stop to grab a bite or rest from the southern California sun.
